Social media will also be central to future loyalty programmes, rewarding brand ambassadors for social shares as much as - if not more than - the amount they purchase. We are only beginning to see how smart-phones can bring the digital experience into the store. People are integrating mobile into shopping - 59% have used a mobile phone to research a product before purchasing it in store, while a third look at an item in the store before buying online. Existing beacon and Bluetooth technologies can help retailers replicate the personalised online experience shoppers love by recognising loyal customers and alerting them to deals on items they like. Mobile can also improve the payment experience, reducing the time spent in queues, or do away with queues all together as the mobile checkout goes to the customer. This connected retail experience should also extend to loyalty rewards, which studies have shown people would like delivered directly to their phones. Why Visa? The face of retail will continue to change as consumption patterns evolve, supported by new channels, new payment tech and new buying opportunities. Visa Europe is developing innovative products such as tokenisation for data security so people can shop with confidence wherever they are, whatever device they're using
